The Art of the Box: Meet the Artists of Mayfair Games 1 - Michael Menzel

The art on the box can be a major factor in people picking up a game box in the first place.  Artist Michael Menzel has created a number of striking pieces of art that can be seen on the boxes of a number of Mayfair games.  The Pillars of the Earth™ line, including The Pillars of the Earth™, The Pillars of the Earth Expansion Set™, World Without End™, and Pillars of the Earth: Builder's Duel™, are all beautifully illustrated by Michael and it is hard to conceive of the games without the lush art and striking visuals that he brought to the product.

Michael's work has a precision and quality remarkable for such a young artist (he was born in October of 1975).  For insight into his technique, please visit Klaus Teuber's blog on redesigning the Catan 2-player Card Game (due out later this year) and see some examples of Menzel's art going from sketch to complete work:  http://blog.catan.com/?ibsa=get_content&id=353

Michael's work has appeared on a number of award winning games including Thurn & Taxis™ (Spiel des Jahres 2006), Dominion™ (Spiel des Jahres 2009), World Without End™ (Spiel des Jahres Plus 2010) and Pillars of the Earth™ (Deutscher Spiele Preis 2007).

He has created fantastic covers for Atlantis™, and Horus™, whimsical work for Pack & Stack™ and The Dutch Golden Age™, and he has contributed work to the world of Catan.  With over 80 games featuring his work, Michael Menzel has clearly made a name for himself in the world of board game art.  His work can be viewed at his website:  http://www.atelier-krapplack.de/
