Dragon*Con, in Atlanta, GA is known for many things. It fills half a dozen downtown hotels, has a large number of media guests, and and a massive number of attendees in costume. This year, it also played host to a North American Catan Championship Qualifier. There will be 32 qualifiers heald around North America and the 32 winners will head to GenCon 2011 to participate in a 32-person invitational to determine the NACC Champion. The winner of the NACC 2011 Championship will represent North America in the 2012 Catan World Championships.
The Dragon*Con Catan Tournament drew 72 competitors who competed in three preliminary rounds on Friday and Saturday. The top sixteen players moved on to the Sunday morning semi-final round and were divided into four groups. The four winners of the semi-final round moved onto the final game; this final game was the longest and most contested one of the tournament. At the end, the final standings were: 1st) Paul Hakken (Kissimmee, FL), 2nd) Karl Henderson (Starkville, MS), 3rd) Jamie Lane (Columbus, GA), and 4th) Eric Burleson (Suwanee, GA). As the tournament winner, Paul will receive a complimentary trip to GenCon (courtesy of Dragon*Con), as well as hotel accommodations and GenCon badge (provided by Mayfair Games).
