Explore government and the educational values of Road to the White House with your students!

This multi-part U.S. Government activity applies some of the concepts from the game to an actual election. Students are asked to collect candidate information on specific topics, choose between candidates, and explore how issues and their importance affect election.

Standards Met:

Government: Role of Government
Explain, using examples, how political parties, interest groups, the media and individuals influence the policy agenda and decision-making of government institutions.

Government: Systems of Government
Explain the role of elections and political parties (including third parties) in facilitating the democratic process.


Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities: Participation
Explain how an individual participates in primary and general elections including:
- Identifying the major duties, responsibilities and qualifications required for a particular position.
- Becoming informed about candidates and issues.


Social Studies Skills and Methods: Obtaining Information
Identify a current public policy issue and arguments relative to the issue.
Determine criteria by which arguments will be judged.
Identify advocacy groups and obtain public policy information they produce.
Adjust a research question or topic based on information obtained while conducting research.


Social Studies Skills and Methods: Thinking and Organizing
Choose a position on an issue and develop a rationale for that position.
